- Scope and ContentSir John Paterson had a considerable number of voters; this does not surprise the writer, and it shows the great strength of the family interest 'when a person who I never can look upon as the most popular man in the country is countenanced by such numbers. I do not think for all this appearance that an oppostiion can be prevented.....for Sir John Stuart asked my Father what I was to do because if I remained quiet he should be active.' The writer has not yet spoken to John Paterson, who does not know of his conversation with Lord Marchmont. Would value Lord Polwarth's views on the matter. [Refers to candidature for member of parliament for Berwickshire]
