Letter from Elizabeth Hume Campbell, to son Alexander Hume-Campbell, Lord Polwarth. Pleased that Alexander has done as the writer asked, and particularly that he did it so immediately.

'My Lord showed me your letter to him; but said nothing upon the subject. He did not show me his answer therefore I cannot say whether it was is any kinder manner than usual or not. But this I must tell you as I know it will give you pleasure, that from the time he got your letter, he has been in exceedingly good humour, and even cheerful. I have not had one peevish word from him since.' Reference to the death of the Duke of Atholl [John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl, died 6 Nov 1774]. Has been told that 'The Duke of Atholl was walking by she side of the river, which was in top flood, and by that means had undermined the bank, and that his grace slipped in, and was carried down the stream some way before he was found.' Informed that a match has been agreed between Lord Tullibardine and and Lord Cathcart's eldest daughter, and the second Miss Cathcart and Mr Graham. [Note: Honourable Jane Cathcart, daughter of Charles Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart, married John Murray, Marquess of Tullibardine [4th Duke of Atholl] 26 December 1774; her sister Mary married Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch on the same day.]
