  • Scope and Content
    A) a cottage conveyed to S B Leach in 1874 B) a cottage conveyed to S B Leach in 1875 He had also property in Keysoe Row, and all of these he conveyed to Mark Sharman and William Smail in 1895. The Riseley properties continued to descend together until 1909, and probably by this time the descriptions on the older title deeds meant little to the owners. For whatever reason, although the modern title deeds from 1909 relate only to part of the property (A) above) yet both sets of old deeds were handed over Both A) and B) can be identified on the map made at the time of the Riseley Enclosure Award in 1796. A) then belonged to Ann Dawson, and B) to Sir Abraham Hume There are several documents of special interest. X333/4-7 show the way in which an ageing yeoman made provision for his old age in the 17th century; X333/9 is the first known reference to Riseley windmill; X333/16 is a settlement by a carpenter on his wife at the time of their marriage. The nineteenth century documents illustrate how in Riseley, as in so many other Bedfordshire villages, houses were for a time divided into several tenements or cottages to cope with the sudden rise in the rural population
