'Mr Scott to have the support of the third party for the present election, to give up at the end of 4 years, if required by the gentleman named in the agreement, and then to be received member for the Burrows [Linlithgow Burghs], but in all human probability the requisition will never be made, for several reasons, one particularly, because the member to be for the Burrows, Sir [James] Cockburn, is the man some of the 4 gentleman, or more parts of them, would rather bring in as turn out, and as the requisition upon Mr H.S. [Hugh Scott] must necessarily set him aside, who could not get in agian, it is not probable the 4 gentleman will agree to do that. The other scheme of the last years, and giving the first to Mr Renton would no do - for he was not the choice of the third party, and he must have come in as the present candidate, there being no other. But truly I believe they think more of the credit of having the requisition in their power than of the exercic of it. After the more mature deliberation this plan has been fixed, as the best that could be in the situation of things. Sir John Paterson's offers being such as I formerly hinted; and I am well persuaded it will establich Mr Scott not only for the full seven years but infutire. The agreement however about going out and coming in for Burrows is not to be published but confided only to a few friends. The 4 are Mr Douglas, Wedderburn, Drummelzier and Mr KerMoriston.' Sir John Paterson was in town again on Tuesday on a very bad affair with the tenant Forsyth. 'It wears a bad appearance for the Knight, and I hear Lady Anne is much troubled about it.'
