    Letter from Thomas Bland [to Alexander Hume-Campbell, 1st Baron Hume of Berwick]. Sent from Colchester. Pleased to hear that the oysters arrived safe and good. Another barrel has been ordered. The writer has had a cold and cough for some weeks and lost all relish for food.

    Camp broke up soon after previous letter. Have now only a few troops of the 3rd Regiment of Dragoon Guards, with several recruiting parties, but have been filled with various regiments of militia on their way to their winter quarters. Mention of politics and resignations of Lords Gower and Weymouth. Reference to son in law Charles Smyth – ‘I do not see how he can possibly go on in his present way without receiving such very large helps from me as I cannot altogether spare.’
