- TitleLetter from Thomas Bland [to Alexander Hume-Campbell, 1st Baron Hume of Berwick]. Sent from Berkhamsted. [Typed transcript available]. Has made enquiries about a dairymaid. One of the sisters has got a place; the other called on the writer yesterday. She is aged about 27, and willing to serve in the care of dairy and poultry. She asked for wages of 9 guineas per year and 7 shillings a week board wages, which the writer considers an enormous sum. She is married, but her husband lives in service at a great distance, and her only child lives constantly with her brother at Green End.

- Scope and ContentHas received a letter from Mr Butler and he states ‘I wrote to Mr Grenville a long time ago about the dairy-maid and desir’d him to send an answer either to Lord Polwarth or me. I have rec’d none, so conclude Lord Polwarth has.’ Mr Butler sends word that he has heard of a small ready furnished house in Colchester, which the writer would like better than lodgings. If it is tolerable and the rent not unreasonable, the writer will take it. The writer thought Lord and Lady M. [Marchmont?] very indifferent when he last saw them.
