Letter from Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke to Lady Amabel Lucas, sent from Wimpole. Contemplation of a plan to unite the Cambridge navigation with the river at Stortford, and to open a communication with the metropolis.

The writer proposes a branch from the Cambridge and London canal to the north road near Arrington bridge, and it is further resolved to extend this branch as far as Shefford, if it is approved by the landowners through whose estates it would pass. It will therefore depend on the Bedfordshire gentleman and ladies whether this navigation shall be extended to Shefford, with a view thereafter of being extended to the Grand Junction canal at some point near Leighton Buzzard. The arguments in favour are the same as those which apply to inland navigation in general, and particularly that it will bring fuel and every other article at a rate infinitely cheaper than land carriage. The writer asks Lady Lucas to patronise the proposal and to take some shares. The writer is leaving tomorrow for Norfolk, where he will join his wife and daughters; they are at Aldborough, and intend to proceed by Lowestoft and Yarmouth to Cromer. The writer hopes the sea air might restore his wife’s voice.
