'The dowager Lady Somers since she left me has taken to Town with her a very pretty little girl, the only daughter of her son Colonel Cocks, aged five years, and in London she was met by Mr [Thomas]Waddington and his lady, who have offered them to adopt the child as well as educate her. The parents (however kind the proposal) could not bring themselves to part with her absolutely at once, but she is to be at Northwold for some months as on a visit. The Dowager was very anxious on the subject, but I have not heard from her Ladyship since...' [This refers to Frances Cocks, daughter of Philip James Cocks and his wife Frances].
