    Anna Maria Whitworth was born in Carlton, Beds. She was the daughter of George and Anna Maria Battams. In 1849 she married Charles Whitworth. Charles had been born at Kempston in 1817; he died in 1888 aged 71. The couple had 14 children: - Charles Henry born 1850 in Cold Brayfield. Married Gertrude Mary Eve (1852-1889) - three daughters: Eva bc 1876, Ethel bc1878, Dorothy bc 1880. Newport Pagnell mill. - Anna M B bc. 1852 Cold Brayfield. - Louisa bc. 1854. Cold Brayfield - John Battams bc. 1855 Cold Brayfield. Builds Wellingborough Mills. - Maria A bc. 1857Cold Brayfield, dies Biddenham. - Kate bc. 1858 Cold Brayfield - George Benjamin bc. 1859 Cold Brayfield - farms Grove Farm, Turvey. - Eliza O bc. 1860 Cold Brayfield - Mary bc. 1861 Cold Brayfield - Alice Flora bc. 1863 Cold Brayfield. M Matthew Attwood in 1885. - Robert bc. 1864 Cold Brayfield - Florence Gertrude bc. 1868 Cold Brayfield - Herbert William bc. 1869 Cold Brayfield - Newton Thomas bc. 1870 Newton Blossomville. M Frances Maria Bletsoe in 1899, lived in Wilby. The Whitworth and Battams families were farmers and the Whitworths also ran mills in Turvey, Newport Pagnell and Wellingborough. Anna Maria continued to live in Newton Blossomville until moving to Earls Barton, where she was living in 1901, with some of her daughters. She later moved to St Albans, where she died.
  • Scope and Content
    The newspaper cuttings were originally either adhered to the pages of the album on loose within it. The majority of the cuttings relate to reports of deaths, funerals and marriages of members of the Whitworth and Battams families and their wider connections. There are also reports on: the building of Wellingborough Mills and other alterations to mills run by members of the Whitworth family, events in Lavendon, Clifton Reynes, Olney, Cold Brayfield, Turvey and Earls Barton, and reports of local celebraties such as Mr Charles Howard. There are pictures and a report regarding Wellingborough Grammar School and reports relating to the educational attainments of Eva Whitworth, who attended Bedford High School and gained a BA in 1897.
