- Date free text17 Jul 1819
- Production dateFrom: 1819 To: 1819
- Scope and ContentThanks for venison. Mention of a wedding at to take place at the end of August [marriage of widowed John Eliot, Earl of St.Germans and Harriet Pole Carew]. Regrets that Lady de Grey is not to be at the fete, at the writer will not get a full account of it. Mr Broome is somewhat weaker from the great discharge of an abscess, which had been very painful for 5 days and has now been opened. The cough and expectoration are at present as much as ever. His wife and daughters are very low about hin. Mention of 'Kitty' [granddaughter Catherine Harriet Yorke] going to school when her Mama thinks her of proper age. Reference to the sermons of Rev. Commeline. Has received a letter from 'another clergyman' [Clarke]. He has brought up a very large family on an income of under £100 per annum and put them all in the way of providing for themselves. Now and then the writer gives him a little assistance. The letter just received, if true, is a sad picture of the present state of the country. Quotes from the letter which states that a great many labourers of the county [Lincolnshire] have been several months out of work and obliged to have relief from their parishes. He has three sons who have been out of employ for three months; two have a wife and three children each. In trying to support his family, the clergyman has put himself in debt, and seeks assistance.
