- Scope and ContentWinters audit with the writer's tenants was held last Monday; hopes to hear the result tomorrow from agent Mr Phillopts, who attended the meeting and stayed afterwards. He and writer's son Joseph returned from the dinner 'well fumigated and stupified' with tobacco. Discussed 'Marmion [poem by Walter Scott] with Phillpots. Besdies son Joseph, Mrs Plumer from Malvern has been staying (she offered her house to Mrs Thomas Vyner), and also grandson George Waddington. George has been making frequent excursions to Eastnor Castle to see Miss Jane Cocks, sister of Mrs Joseph Yorke [Catherine]. [Note: George Waddington and Jane Cocks married March 1817.] Reference to Mlle. Hompesch: 'the black season of bills is coming on her again...' Family at Horkesley [son Philip Yorke] have no chance of recovering their debt from Tom Sadler. Writer fears he would not make a very safe tenant for Lady de Grey, unless he gets some wealthy prudent friend to be bound for his rent. Reference to a paper that the writer is to sign as trustee relaing to interest on Navy Bills secured on the Wenman estates. Mention of a child of Lady Grantham's having mumps. Reference to an eclipse of the sun the previous month.
