    Mary Agnes Waddington accepts kind offer of a bed in Lady Lucas household on Tuesday; she brings no maid-servant, and will set out early the next day. The writer will miss her companionship when she leaves. Reference to economic circumstances - bankruptcy of banks, income tax, ability of farmers to pay rent etc. Comments about a picture seen by grandson George Waddington at Mr West the painters; it was purchased after the battle of Waterloo by Col. [James] Hay from a solicitor who found it amongst the baggage of a French officer. The painting shows a man examining the hand of a lady which is held out to him. [Believed to refer to The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck.]
