    Ainslie Garrett Crommelin born 18/11/1826 London, son of Charles Barker Crommelin (1790-1822) and Emelia Ellen nee Rickett (1801-1842). Ainslie married in India in 1856 Julian Hankin (1836-1908) and they had 8 children. He was a civil engineer on Indian Service, lived in Ipswich, Suffolk in 1881. On the 1891 census Ainslie S Crommelin, a 65 year-old retired civil engineer (India) born in London and his 56 year-old wife, Julia, live at 40 Linden Road, Bedford with their daughters Ethel (30), Amy (25) and Annie (20). The household also consists of eleven boarders between the ages of 2 and 13 and a 7 year old granddaughter. From their surnames the boarders appear to be from five separate families. Annie Crommelin, all the boarders and the granddaughter were all born in India. Ainslie and Annie Crommelin both appear to have died in 1900. By 1901 Julia is a widow and is described as a boarding house keeper. She shares 40 Linden Road with daughter Ethel, daughter Amy Sharpe, granddaughter Hazel Sharpe, nephew Clarence Crommelin, niece Evelyn Crommelin, grandnephew Henry Crommelin, Irene Ogston (a governess), 8 young boarders from India, the West Indies and Singapore, a cook, a parlour maid, two nurses and a house maid. Julia Crommelin died in 1908 aged 73.

    The views from the photograph album are of Bedford and the surrounding area and, apart from one group photograph, do not reflect the family and boarders at 40 Linden Road.

    Exact provenance unknown but assumed that the then owner of the album either supplied the photographic copies held by the archive service or lent the album for the copies to be made c1999.
