Scope and Content
Rector asks to use the Manor Room for the Women's Institute and Infant Welfare 'They will only be comparatively few, and I am not asking for its use by any possibly rowdy people, who might do damage. The two activities mentioned above are run by my wife, and she is always there...We're finding our 'guests' a bit of a handful in the village - they are all RCs, complete with nuns and monks, so that we can't do anything for the children in religious matters.' Has been warned liable to be recalled to the RAF.
H H L replies that arrangements for the manor room will have to go through the agent. Would like to get the valuables back into the abbey. Discusses evacuees to his parish and his work as chaplain of the 44th Division.
Rector responds: difficulties dealing with agent as they have all been called up; has found quarters for the WI if Hugh, as Lord of the Manor could allow use of the Manor Room for the Infant Welfare 'only takes 1 1/2 hours once a month'. Not likely to get his papers for 3 months. Struggling with floods all round, Northampton & Harrold roads are blocked. 'It's up to the Gas works in Turvey - higher than I've ever seen it here.'
H H L replies: would be happy for the Infant Welfare to use the manor room but not just up to him and 'the war has meant a general inability to deal with any but the most pressing business'. Church matters.
