- Admin/biog historyThe Lansdowne Club was established at 70 New Bedford Road as a private members club in 1957 as there had been identified “…a real need in our Town for a Club providing amenities for social and recreational activities – including good food.” (Z1703/4/1) and a desire to establish a non-political club (Z1703/4/2). The Lansdowne Club was run by a management committee headed by a succession of Chairmen with a manger resident at the premises. The first full year of trading ended with 702 members and continued to grow to a peak membership of 2484 in 1984 which included ordinary members, family members, country members, lady members, senior citizens, family senior citizens, widows and honorary members. (Z1703/4/13). In March 2000 an important change took place for the Club when the special General Meeting allowed female members the same rights as male members. This was shortly followed by the election of five women to the General Committee in 2000 (Z1703/4/28). After financial losses and declining membership the Lansdowne Club permanently closed in 2018.
