    Has offered that son Joseph, should he wish, could give up the treasury and become the writer's 'first minister', dealing with property etc., but he has no relish for country employments. Mr Smith is well and stays at Short Grove till November. The dowager Lady Somers has just left them. Health and whereabouts of various family members. Attempts to find a dairymaid for Lady Lucas. Hopes soon to discover whether of the young heir of a great castle and the youngest daughter of a certain earl have made an intimate acquaintance and availed themselves of the opportunities their visit to Malvern has offered them. [Probably a reference to John Somers-Cocks, later 2nd Earl Somers, who married Caroline Harriet Yorke, daughter of Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl Hardwicke in February 1815.] Mention of current affairs and Austria having declared for the allies.
