- Scope and ContentLord & Lady Balcarres suffering for their large family in Scotland; some were in danger 'but by great care and attention and much fumigating and washing with vinegar the putrid disorder is stopped and they are all recovering.' [Refers to Alexander Lindsay, 6th Earl of Balcarres and wife Elizabeth. Alexander is sister of Elizabeth Yorke]. Lady C Hamilton has been in Cambridgeshire; she came with Miss Copley for a week to see Lady Watson [Juliana, nee Copley]. 'It must have been a very painful meeting for the sisters as I hear Lord Abercorn means to marry her very soon... Lady C's situation is at present so very awkward he hastens his match purely out of delicacy to her.' [Note: John James Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn was first married to Catherine Copley, who died in September 1791. In March 1792 he married Lady Cecil Hamilton.] Mention of son Philip about to take his degree at St.John's College, Cambridge.
