- Scope and ContentLong description of the countryside round Tewkesbury, viewed from a vantage point from where the famiy went to watch a race a few weeks previously. Description of a 'fine tapestry just put up at Lord Coventry's' [Croome Court, Worcestershire] Reference to Mr Banks and his engagement on the other side of the world [see L30/11/339/4]. Writer awaits the Admiralty book with the account of the manners, customs and religions of 'these distant islands'. Would likewise be glad to hear what particular advantage society in general is expected to reap from these great discoveries... [Note: Joseph Banks was appointed to a joint Royal Navy/Royal Society scientific expedition to the south Pacific Ocean on HMS Endeavour, 1768–1771. This was the first of James Cook's voyages of discovery in that region.]
