  • Scope and Content
A handwritten letter from R P S Waddy (former Rector of St Andrew's, Ampthill) on headed paper from St. Fursey, in Ditchingham, Bungay to Honora Grimmer: "My dear Nora, This is only a housewarmer, assuming that you really have immigrated rather than emi- as you did to Station Road. And I hope the house IS warmer, or as warm, just now. We suffer little because we don't have to travel - but what a divided land we live in. I was really relieved that none of our long distance friends attempted to get here for the Epiphany: ice, snow and petrol shortages all round. But we had 100 here, a heavenly sung Eucharist - the Epiphany hymns are best of all (and brightest) - and a party in the convent. I shall put in a rough draft of my inevitable speech; no one could stop me. [AU34/21/7/16/20/1] Afterwards we had a lunch party, and my far-flung family had combined to give me the Compact Edition of the Oxford Dictionary - all boiled down into two volumes, with a magnifying glass to read it with. It is an overwhelming present, suggesting that I must survive for years and years to study it (and I have not intention of waiting until I reach Z!) It further complicates the discarding of my books: every time I put a shelf-ful aside, Judy (or anybody else) says, 'Oh no, not that!' We shall be relieved when it is all over, as you must be. Christopher and his family are flying back from the Bahamas on Febrary 8th, and Daniel is to have an operation on his left hand in mid-February, to see what can be done. They will be going back to Nassau in July, but it will be good to see them. Havana was in superb form at the golden jubilee, and won all hearts. There is no answer to this letter! Yours affectionately, Pat Stacy Waddy"
