  • Scope and Content
A handwritten letter from R P S Waddy (former Rector of St Andrew's, Ampthill) on headed paper from St. Fursey, in Ditchingham, Bungay to Honora Grimmer: "Dear Nora, Christmas greetings from East Anglia and a little something for the magazine postage, from us both. East Anglia is most enjoyable seen through double-glazing - our windows are singlularly single! But we have enough coal and enough oil, and enough money to pay for them and that is what Mr Micawber commended but never achieved. (We have evensong at the unchristian time of 5.30, so I miss Arthur Lowe in the latest T.V. David Copperfield. But alas, I can no longer read or enjoy Dickens. Do you find yourself more and more selective in what you are willing to read? Which leads on to a school production of James Bridie's Tobias and the Angel, which I had never seen. But I re-read the book of ..... and had not realised how funny it is - which of course Bridie brings out. Has Vic even done it at Ampthill? Does he still. It's good. End of bracket). Life goes placidly here. There is a new batch of girls in need of care arriving in January, who will be less placid. But I still teach - indeed, I have been 'promoted' (my word) to teaching general knowledge to the lowest three forms, as well as my RE. It isn't an easy subject as I now know; but they have taught me a great deal that I didn't know, and I hope something happens in reverse. (Any experienced advice will be gladly followed!) So there is still plenty to do, and I love not having to go to meetings in the dark. Margaret has caught me up in the seventies and continues to look after me with care and success; and our two grandaughters flourish. Havana Marking, as red as Judy, went with her parents to India for six weeks, aged 2 1/2, and survived happily - she has already seen far more than I did in 17 years and is as quick as could be. Drusilla Waddy is one and a bit and as fair as Christopher was at the same age - a happy contented baby. So do enjoy the tonic of watching them grow up, in happy families. All good wishes for 1975 and many happy memories. Yours sincerely, Pat Stacy Waddy"
