  • Scope and Content
A handwritten letter from R P S Waddy (former Rector of St Andrew's, Ampthill) on headed paper from their new home of St. Fursey, in Ditchingham, Bungay (where he has become a chaplain and teacher in the convent of All Hallows), to Honora Grimmer: "Dear Nora, Then I'd love to have the magazine still - thank you. I was interested in the obituary of John Hillam, whom I did not really know. Tell Andrew - or the editor - that Cosmo Gordon Lang was never principal of Cuddesdon, though he loved it and used to come back there every year for Holy Week. I always liked and admired him: and when I reread his famous broadcast after the Abdication, I still think that he said what needed saying, and was most unfairly criticised. Norfolk has greeted us with three lovely weeks of sun (or at least dry weather) and we are settling in to this very nice house and to Community life - lots of bells! Our removal firm forgot our best china and left it in a cupboard at Caversham: and they 'lost' all our lampshades. But the lost have been found and will eventually follow us here, and the carpets will fit and we shall really feel settled in. The hostel girls who are my special care are away for a fortnight; when they come back and the schools start work again, life will be pleasantly full. And it's lovely to live in clean air and hear nothing except hens (in the early morning) and very occasional aeroplanes. It is 25 years since I came home from India and we came to Ampthill. We bought a Pye radio (from Frank Woods?) for the Queen's wedding and only abandoned it last month - the batteries were too expensive, but the Rectory had no electricity in those far off days. Yes, 25 very good years. We saw this week the death of Andrew Wingfield's widow; but she wasn't the mother of ..... was she? I'm too old to remember. Yours sincerely, Pat Stacy Waddy"
