Scope and Content
A handwritten letter from Mary George to Honora Grimmer:
"Dear Nora,
I had a note from G Higgins today, saying he wanted very much to be remembered to you and your family. He could not recall your exact address now, and was afraid if he sent a card it wouldn't get to you, so he wrote to me instead wishing me to send greetings and remembrances. Apparently, the Bishop of Peterborough is a fellow of New College, so came into contact with G. there, and asked him if he would come and work in his diocese when ordained. G. likes him very much and of course, Mr Minter's family had lots of connections in that area, so Mr Higgins is very pleased and quite a few relatives from Grantham will be at the ordination on June 13th in P. Cathedral.
I am interested in the Bishop, as I heard him at one High School Speech Day. His name is Leeson, and he was a famous Headmaster before doing work in the Church. He is married to an old girl of the High School, by name Lomax originally, and he is a Governer of the Harpur Trust.
He is rather unique, in that he wears black silk stockings in lieu of the ordinary garters on occasion. He has a slight stutter, but conquers it marvellously - perhaps Rosemary heard him speak.
G. has to get his vestments ...., so it ... to be quite an expensive outfit. G. said he had a very nice letter from Mr Cooper, so was pleased. G. is to work in the parish of St. Mary Eastfield at Peterborough - in case you wish to write to him at any time.
Yours sincerely,
Mary S F George
p.s. Mrs Higgins is still a Councillor, much engaged in the Publich Health Service at Watford. She is still a school secretary also. G.'s actual address is c/o St. Mary's Vicarage, Eastfield Road, Peterborough."
