  • Scope and Content
A handwritten letter from Samuel Exton Swaffield at 10 Rothsay Gardens, Bedford to his niece Honora Grimmer: "Dear Nora, I was pleased to see your writing again this morning and I quite appreciate the reason of not seeing or hearing anything of you. Am glad you like things I put down for you. The Tea Set was left to Auntie Jeannie by an Aunt on her mother's side and the Clock was a Wedding present to her Father. It is a good timekeeper, but it may require a clean as it has not had one for some years and requires winding every 14 days. Yes, I am keeping wonderfully well considering all things, but I do most acutely feel the busting up of my home. I was in hopes I should pass from this world to the next in my own home, but it seems it was not to be. I had a surprise visit this afternoon from your Dad & Mum. What a dreadful cough your Dad has got, am afraid his holiday will not benefit him much. Come and see me when you can, it is a bit dull. There are only 3 men here and the other two are a bit grumpy and are helpless. Altogether there are 15 patients in the home. One thing, the staff are very nice and are always ready to keep one if necessary and the food is good as food goes nowadays. I must now say goodbye, with love. Your Affect. Uncle, S E Swaffield P.S. Can you lend me a book or two. Mine are in for the sale."
