- Scope and ContentThanks for letter and venison. Writer has received a long letter from Lady Hardwicke, who has seen Lord Grantham at Tunbridge. Lord Grantham intends to return to Paris and to take Lady Grantham with him, which the writer finds shocking - '...that wretched city, the sink of every vice and imorality, is in such a state of imflamation and disorder that the smallest spark elicited by a trifling dispute in the streets only, might occasion in an instant, the most terrible explosion.' Reference to the political situation in France.
