  • Scope and Content
Reference to son Charles' succession to the vacant fellowship [First Lord of the Admiralty?]; mentions unmerited and scandalous abuse which the opposition have poured upon him in consequence. Mention of recent election. 'I am almost afraid to enquire after either Lord Grantham's poor boy [Hon. Frederick William Weddell, born 11 Apr 1810?] or our most amiable friend Mrs James Yorke, the accounts being so distressing which I have heard of both! - as to the suffering baby, I doubt the case is hopeless and I much fear our dear friend, if she gets over the present attack, will never again be what she was, and be liable to other attacks which may prove fatal.' Writer is going to Clifton [Bristol] tomorrow. The writer trusts that Burdett will be sent ot the Tower. [Charles Yorke made himself exceedingly unpopular in 1810 by bringing about the exclusion of strangers, including reporters for the press, from the House of Commons under the standing order, which led to the imprisonment of Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Baronet in the Tower and to riots in London.] 'God forbid that Parliament should be intimidated by the threats of the mob headed by Messrs Cobbet and Co.' Breif mention of affairs in Spain and Portugal, and the marriage of Bonaparte to Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma.
