  • Title
    Information of John Crouch, Henlow, labourer: searched house of William Summerfield of Clifton (Ashwell residing there) for rabbits, after his brother William Crouch had reported seeing James Ashwell and Thomas Pell carrying a sack with something moving inside. They found nothing. The constable later told him that two rabbits had been sold to William Crowder of Broom and four to Robert Conington of Clophill. Identifies rabbits at Crowder's. Information of William Crowder of the White Horse, Broom, publican: refused to buy live rabbits from Ashwell and Pell so they killed them and he bought two. Conington called in on his way to Biggleswade market and gave Ashwell and Pell a quantity of beef in payment for four rabbits. A "pensioner" named George Green purchased the remaining rabbits for 3 pints of beer, 9d. Information of Samuel Thorogood of Clifton: found George Green "dining on the rabbit he had purchased"; with John Watts, constable, arrested Ashwell. Examination of James Ashwell: nothing to say. Examination of Thomas Pell: denies stealing rabbits. Information of George Green: gave 3 pints of beer for a rabbit.
