  • Scope and Content
Charles has arrived, and been a great addition to the coterie. Has not heard from son Joseph for 2 months; mentions ship 'Resource' which was to touch in Madiera, but must have reached Halifax by now. Intended marriage between Jemima York and Reginald Pole-Carew: '[He] has a very good character and is certainly an agreeable, well bred man; therefore I hope she has a prospect of happiness with him, but I confess in point of rank and fortune I thought both she and Mr John [Yorke] looked higher. I had the honour of a letter from him about ten days ago to signify the event to me, but from the style of it I really don't know whether he wrote in a good or a bad humour, or whether he is pleased or displeased.' Speculates whether John Yorke will re-marry. Health of Lord Hardwicke: has received no benefit from his journey to Bath. Mention of the frequent confinements of Lady Grantham. Went on a trip in a cutter to thte Isle of Wight; the wind was suh that 'neither Caroline of myself could partake of the cold collation we carried on board.' A trip to Newport in the island of St. Helens is planned. Excursions on land have been curtailed by lameness in one of the horses. Has received a letter from 'the Capell girls'; mention of the death of Lady Essex and Lord Essex quarrelling with his sisters about the disposition she has made. Wonders if there is any truth in the news that Lord Hyde is to marry Lady Harriet Pitt. Mention of new taxes, window tax, duty on tea, etc. Smuggling in the area.
