  • Scope and Content
Sends copies of an agreeement and of two letters from Wiggins relating to the farm at Aldham near Colchester, occupied by Mrs Francis. It seems that Mrs Francis cannot hold the farm and, though Lady Lucas will regret that she and her family should be driven to parochial relief, it is not a case of particular severity. 'Neither Mrs Francis not her late husband in education or habits were above the class of common labourers.' Copy agreement for letting of farm in Copford and Aldham containing 86.5 acres to John Ambrose and his nephew John Brand. Term 10 years from Michaelmas 1816 at rent of £85 per annum. Copy letters from Wiggins explain that Ambrose has farmed the land for the widow Francis for 7 years; her debt to him is now near £700 which her stock and crop will not cover; Ambrose has no other way to be reimbursed than by continuing to hold the farm. Also refers to the infirm state of widow Francis' health which precludes the possibility of her obtaining a livlihood for herself.
