- Scope and ContentRelates to application to the London Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb for a plance for Elizabeth Ann Gillman. All the children recommended by the committee were chosen and 4 others, and of the 4 the child who had the least number of votes had 1076. It seems the committee add the weight of the recommendation when the age of the child is such that if the election be lost any further opportunity of becoming a candidate would be lost. In each of the 4 other successful cases there are additional circumstances to excite compassion, such as that the child is one of a numerous family; and 3 of the 4 were of parents who had one or more other children deaf and dumb. In Elizabeth Gillman's description it does not appear that her father has any other child to maintain. It is desirable that, if there are any other circumstances of compassion in the case, they should be stated.
