- Scope and ContentReference to the debt owed by Firmin - '....one of the last men, according to my notion of him, whom I should suspect to have in contemplation the violent remedy to which your ladyship alludes. I shall apply to him again if he suffers the next month to pass over without making some payment.' Mention of a Mr. Thornton of the banking house of Dawn Thornton & Co. There was a report to the prejudice of his credit, which was contradicted by keeping the bank open an hour beyond the usual time for the payment of drafts upon them. An action has since been commenced against one of the propagators of the report. The Mr Thornton in question is believed to be a cousin of the Mr Thornton of Blunham. Sir William Abdy's estate when his offer was made consisted of about 180 acres titheable. This is now reduced by the quantity taken for the tithes but the value may be deemed thae same as the inclosure was under contemplation when the offer was made, and considered in the valuation. Sir William required £11,500 and Mr Thorpe thought it worth about £7,000. It is possible that Thorpe would add to his former valuation due to the competition for land since the inclosure. Mr Williamson's estate is also free from tithes, but quantity as well as quality must be considered in comparison. Both estates have a farm house and farm buildings. Mr Harrison is recovered and expects to set off for Silsoe next monday. The writer considers the offer of a new lease to Sadler at a rent of £350 'sufficiently liberal'; recommends waiting until the present lease nearly expires.
