  • Scope and Content
The writer and Mr Harrison have been pressed by Stormer and Chapman, the two labourers who have built cottages at Silsoe to represent to Lady Lucas their wish to have something to show for the money they have expended. The writer has sketched an agreement which corresponds with Lord Grantham's opinion on the subject; his Lordship doubting only the necessity of an agreement in writing. It is feared that if the agreement is entered into a letting book or survey only, the tenant or those who may claim under him may mistake the nature of it and thus complaint and dissatisfaction be excited. If the plan be approved of it may be considered as a rule on future occasions and Mr Harrison says cottages are much wanted. This day has been employed in discussions respecting allotments which are not all quite settled, the receipt of further sums on account of the rate and further conversation with Mr Nethersole and his solicitor; as they had not taken the opinion of Councel the adjustment stands over till the next meeting, which will be in November.
