  • Title
    Examination of Evan Jones of Ampthill: hearing that Henry Dyer had a gun for sale, which he suspected had been stolen from the premises of the late Phillip Small of Ampthill, surgeon, he offered to buy it, asking Dyer to meet him at his garden. In the meantime he collected Joseph Smith of Ampthill, whitesmith, to identify the gun, and Charles Goode, the constable. When confronted by the constable Dyer said Small gave him the gun in settlement of a debt he owed him for wages. Infomation of Charles Goode: searched the house of William Wilson of Ampthill, where Dyer lodged, and found two boxes belonging to Dyer which contained a bottle of gin, a bottle of wine, a powder flask, a shot bag and shot belts, a brown holland bag containing a gun punch, a shot charger and a quantity of caps for a percussion gun, a shot bag containing a quantity of shot, a gun case "of list", a case of lancets, two single lancets, two instruments to extract teeth, and a greatcoat. Was also present as described in Evan Jones's deposition.
