Scope and Content
In the name of God Amen I Edward Waterfield of Northill in the county of Bedford, Cordwainer, being of perfect mind do make this my last will and testament, in manner following. I give devise and bequeath all my copyhold estate situate at Kempston in the said county of Bedford (consisting of a messuage in the occupation of my son in law Stephen Harding, with a close thereto adjoining containing about one acre and about seven acres and three roods of arable land lieing (lying) dispersedly in the open fields of Kempston aforesaid, which are now in the occupation of Sherman Jeffries) unto my grandson John Harding (son of the above named Stephen Harding) and to his heirs and assigns forever, which said premises are by me intended to be surrendered to the use of this my will…My freehold estate, which I am possessed of at Brook End in the said parish of Northill, consisting of a cottage and orchard thereto belonging and adjoining being about a rood and half of ground in the occupation of Roger Layton, I give and devise unto my grand daughter Sarah Banes, and to her heirs and assigns forever… I give and bequeath unto my foreman Thomas Green of the said parish of Northill five pounds (for his care in assisting me in the management of my business) payable one month after my decease … All the residue of my personal estate, whatsoever and wheresoever, after the payment of my funeral expences (expenses), just debts, and the reasonable expences (expenses) attending the execution of this my will are paid and satisfied I give and bequeath unto my said grand daughter Sarah Banes, and to her heirs if she should not live to survive me. And I do hereby appoint my kinsman John Rose of the town of Bedford wheelwright, and Matthew Banes of Sandy in the said county wheelwright joint executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty one.
Signed sealed published and declared by the said Edward Waterfield to be his last will and testament in the presence of us, who before him and in the presence of each other have signed our names as witnesses thereto.

April 11th 1782 this will was proved on the oaths of John Rose and Matthew Banes joint executors herein named who were sworn to the due execution thereof, and that the value of the personal effects do not amount to £300 but to upwards of £100 before me J LLoyd, Surrogate
