Letter from Charles H Ware, Gray's Inn, to Amabel, Baroness Lucas.

The writer has received Lady Lucas' note and the property tax papers for Putney and St.James. If Mary Barker's property is so small as to excuse her from the tax she may claim her exemption, but it is necessary that her name should be included on Lady Lucas' list. It is not material that Mary Barker's name does not appear in the return from Wrest as it appears in both the others. Lady Lucas omitted to add the names of Box and Godsal at the place where they wish to be assessed. The names need to be added before the forms are returned to the assessor. Includes an account of the sale of the Cambridge and Ely security, viz: Purchase money £375 Two years interest on the £500 which was the sum secured £50 Purchase money for the Downham security and all arrears £30 Total proceeds £455 Less Mr Pigott's bill for the two new securities on the Cambridge and Downham tolls £17 6s Mr Park's bill for the new secutiry on the St.Neots tolls £17 Net proceeds £420 13s 4d, of which Lady Lucas' half share of £210 6s 8d has been paid to Hoare's bank. The writer has visited Crudwell. Mr Bowman has not yet completed his valuation; the wiiter hopes to have received his report by the time Lady Lucas arrives in London. Has reason to believe that nearly all the leasholders would be purchasers on fair terms. Writer is now speaking to the leaseholders of lives. There seems to be no prospect of accomplishing an inclosure of the common fields without an Act of Parliament; to suit Lady Lucas' purpose of an early sale that measure must be given up.
