I have been what you could not call a good character, but it is ever since I was put to pre[n]tice at Birmingham., but it has been all my own falt, my dear father and mother have put thereselves to a great many troubles for me, but I am now begining to see my folly. I want to turn over a fresh leaf. I am trying to get the love of Christ in me. Dear parents, I have deserted a week ago last Saturday, and I am in a fresh name, William Chaloner. I must not come home till my 12 years is up, or I shall be coped, for people in Shillington knowne to well, not as I am a bit afraid of imprisonment, but it would disgrace you. I am on board the schooner Elizabeth Ellen Fisher since Tuesday, a captain got me as cook and stuard at 25s a month. It is a coasting vessel. If you have not gave Harry the cloths you might send them to me and I shall be set up. I have bought a bible. I went to the Castle Street Independent chaple last night and heard Mr Jones. I expect to sail to Belfast tomorrow
