Scope and Content
We had rather a ruff passage. I was sick 2 days. We left Swansea on the 4th but did not get to Belfast till the 9th, and we all thought we had found a watery grave. We was going into Belfast dock and it is one of the bigest on the world and there was a brig coming out with a steam tug, and they did not keep quite clear of us, and it smashed ours to peices, it is the 2nd colision in months (?). I didn't say anything about Swansea last time - well, I happened to go to a shipowner's for a ship and it was in Aderlaid Street, and I saw Mr Ford's warehouses, and I went in and asked the men if he wanted anybody on a vessel. Dear parent, you said you was surprised, there is forgiveness, there is love in you. I had not took a bible ardely in my ha[n]d since I left home, only an old parson came up to me and asked me to by it, it is a nice bible. I wish I understood the bible like my dear young sister Lizy. It is now 12 months nearly since I saw my sister Sarah. I forgot all about granmother being at home. Some of these little peices in your letter almost touched the bottom of my heart. You told me to ponder the 3rd chapter of John - I will look at it after I have sent this letter. I see poor Harry has drawn a map on your letter - I am glad the clothes fit him, but if [omission?] or Chall has any old cloths respectable I would pay the carriage to Belfast. I should be glad of the shirts.
