Scope and Content
Letter, posted in a black-edged envelope franked "Hammersmith DE 7 04", 7th December 1904, to Mrs B Swaffield of Church Street, Ampthill, Bedfordshire, from her brother Wilson. Letter headed "135 Guinness Buildings, Fulham Palace Road, Hammersmith, London".
"My dear Sister,
It seems ages since I saw or heard of you which of course I know is not your fault - I found out your address through writing to Mr H Swaffield at Ampthill.
Poor Clara had been ill off and on for 2 or 3 years and quietly passed away, as in a sleep on the 7th November last. I have been out of work nearly 2 years - so have looked after her of course. Lottie, as we call her, Flora I mean, has been very good to us. She lives in a large house, keeps 3 servants. Her husband has had a lot of Government work for years. She has 4 children. Evie and her husband live in a nice little house in Hammersmith, no children but poor Ada is a widow with 3 children.
I have the cramp so in my hands. I can hardly hold the pen. How are you getting on and your family? One thing, we are getting on in years. I am 64 next May and you are 66 next birthday. I have still got the old leaf from the Bible.
We went to Southall some time ago, but C.S. had gone from there. The party in the shop thought they were somewhere at Brentford. I am now by myself in one room and of course feel lonely. It will be a dull Christmas for me. I suppose Laura is quite a woman now. How is Samuel getting on? Compliments of the season to you all.
Your affectionate brother,
Wilson"
