  • Scope and Content
Correspondence to Benjamin George Swaffield from R W Hillman in Lyme Regis: (i) 6th November 1891 - "Although the Executors of the late Mr J Swaffield are under no legal obligation to distribut the Estate among the Residuary Legatees unti the expiration of twelve months from his decease, yet they have resolved to pay each Residuary Legatee £100 on account of his share. I send you a form of receipt, and on your returning it to me signed I will send you a cheque. p.s. The final division of the Residue cannot be made until the Executors shall have suceeded in selling a Farm belonging to the deceased which they offered for sale in June last, but failed to obtain a purchaser." (ii) 31st October 1892 - "I am sending W Biddlecombe a statement of a/c by this post and I hope to send all the Legatees a copy this week, for their perusal and approval. The Executors could only get £1,600 for Wood Farm and that only after waiting a long time to find a purchaser; so that the balance coming to each Legatee will be about £65 only after all the deductions are made." (iii) 8th September 1892 - "The Accounts are now at Somerset House for examination by the Authorities and until they have been passed and the duties paid, I cannot tell you when the final division will take place - but I hope it will be in a month's time or less." Included is an envelope addressed to Arthur Street, Ampthill, stamped with a one penny stamp and franked "Lyme C SP 8 92".
