  • Scope and Content
John Steel was born at Lincoln and educated at Uppingham School. In 1818, when he was 19 he was admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge, and gained his B.A. degree in 1822. In the same year he was ordained as a priest. He then became domestic chaplain to Earl Cowper, perpetual curate of Cowbit, Lincolnshire from 1827-62, and was curate of Tewin in Hertfordshire in 1841 and of Totteridge, Hertfordshire in 1853. From 1862 until his death in 1876 he was rector of Great Horkesley, Essex. His son, John Steel, was admitted to Balliol College, Oxford, in 1855 aged 19. He was ordained priest in 1861 and became an M.A. in 1865. From 1860 to 1863 he was curate of Welby and from 1863 to 1869 of Great Horkesley, where his father was rector. He then became vicar of Harrold until 1895 when he was made rector of Odell. The executors of John Steel senior were his widow Maria, who went to live with her son at Harrold, his son John, and Reverend Edward Garfit of Harlaxton Rectory, Lincolnshire. Other people referred to in these papers are: Leverton Jessopp, a Bedford solicitor who appears to have been related to the Steels, as his son, Augustus L Jessop, addressed John Steel junior as uncle. Annie, wife of Colonel FitzGerald and daughter of John Steel senior. They had two sons. Mr Storr, the rector of Great Horkesley after the death of John Steel.
