The notes are as follows: Kidman system - data base listing description This listing show the date base for the system of programs that I run for Kidman family history. It is therefore a reference to the majority if information I have available. The aim is to use this file as a consistent and convenient way of holding genelogical data, and it therefore represents a reference souce for other researchers. As such it is not ideal when in printed form as there is no index, although the listing can be produced sorted by name or place. The order is approximately chronological by date of birth or baptism. The key to keeping my records on a computer is that each Kidman has an associated reference numer which is unique. This is ideally the date of birth, if it is known, in the format year month day, all figures, eg, 18480721 is the 21st of July 1848. In older parish records only the date of baptism is shown as opposed to date of birth, and in this case I use letters for the month, e g 1848JY21. When there are two births or baptisms on the same day, as in the case of twins, a letter O in place of a zero, a letter I in place of a one, or a different abbreviation for the month is used to keep uniqueness. If only the year is known as in the case of entries from the births register indexes, I use a number consisting if the approximate year of birth and a serial number, eg 18480011. Where the year of birth can only be guessed at, as in the case of a generation where only the marriage onwards is known about, I use a decade and a serial number, eg 163X0001. For each person there is a basic record, and optionally there are a number of record types. Each record consists of one line and take similar formats. The record type is the second field in each line, headed 'code'. Following is a description of the data held in the records. Basic record - type 00. This exists for every Kidman on file and contains data that only exists once for each person: Forenames, and/or intials. In some early civil registrations the index merely showed Female or Male instead of a name. Place of birth. UK pre-1837 parish, UK post-1837 registration district, Australia and USA show state, other countries either city name if sufficiently precise or country name. Date of death/burial. If known shown as accurate as possible, frequently this is only year of death. Number marriages on file, blank if marriage details not known. Currently used by the tree printing program and liable to change. Pointer. Reference number of next sibling in line, 0 if none, blank if details are not known. Census records - type Cn. This is to record where a person has been found on a census film, and is to provide some detail about the person's life by showing occupation and residence. The number n for UK censuses is 1 to 5 for 1841 to 1881 respectively. Occupation. As stated, with abbreviation ofr farmers of ac for acres, m w b for men women boys, and lab for labourers. Place. Hamlet, village or parish of residence on nights if census Date of Cenus. Marriage status. M U or W for married unmarried or widowed respectively, blank if status not shown Pointer. Public Record Office reference number (excluding class) of film, and sometimes folio number. Marriage record - type Mn. One for each known marriage, in sequence when n is the sequence number. Name of spouse. As much as is known, blank if unknown. Indented by one space of surname only known. Place of marriage. As place of birth in basic record. Note many of these are merely duplicates of place of birth and have not yet been corrected. Date of marriage. As much as is known. Code. Currently unused. Pointer. Reference number of first child resulting from the marriage, 0 if none, blank if children not known. Probate record. - type Pn. This is to record that probate was granted for the estate of a person on file or their spouse, n is 0 if the person in the basic record , or is the number of the marriage for a spouse Name. Liable to change. Place. Abbreviation of rcourt where probate granted, eg P.C.C. for Prerogative Court of Canterbury, P.P.R. for Principal Probate Registry. Date of probate. Code. W for will, A for administration, T for death duty, Index entry Pointer. Reference number of document in appropriate archive. Your comments and suggestions on the usefulness of this listing are welcomed. For more information on any of the entries please write enclosing stamps or IRCs for return postage.
