"113 Queens Road, Richmond, Surrey. Dear Miss Ira-Smith, I have been intending to write for several days to tell you how things are going here. It has been evident for some time that Di is getting steadily weaker, and last Tuesday she simply could not get out of bed, she was so "trembly". When the Doctor came, I told him it was imperative she should be removed to a nursing home if she could not get out of bed, and an ambulance came on Thursday morning, and off she went. I saw her on Friday, and she said she was being well looked after, and was quite comfortable. The Doctor told me he has thought all along that there is a malignant growth on the larynx. This will account for the increasing weakness of her voice. She has become very thin and waster. I somehow feel that we shall not see her back here again. She would have to effect an amazing recovery, and at her age, this is hardly likely. Fortunately she has no pain of any kind. I am driving Florence over to see her this (Sunday) afternoon. She is full of strength and vigour, apart from her lack of memory and partial senility. I will give you further news later on. Our love to you both. Yours sincerely, John Hillam"
