Letter heading: "St Joseph's, Ampthill, Beds. Telephone Ampthill 111". "Dear Miss Ira-Smith, I thought I would run down in the car on Thursday morning, and see if there was a chance of getting anything out of you! If it is not convenient, don't hesitate to drop a card and say so. If I hear nothing, I will come out about 11. I expect you were surprised to see me on Sunday. I was having such an enjoyable time with my Father in Yorkshire when the news of the peace came, and I was plunged into a state of great indecision. I had arranged for Mr.Bastin to do the Sunday morning services, but I thought perhaps I ought to get back to direct the services on to Thanksgiving for Victory lines. So I returned. The usual nightmare on the train. I stood for 5 hours in the corridor all the way down from York. It isn't worth going back again this week until Friday, so I am doing lots of odd jobs that want doing. I hope you are all well. It IS nice to feel that it really is all over! Yours sincerely, John Hillam"
