Oxendon House Children's Home, Leighton Buzzard
  • Admin/biog history
Originally a remand home for boys, later a children's home. The original Oxenden House was totally destroyed by fire in February 1974. From then until October 1978 the work of the establishment was carried out from a house at Carlton School. During this time a new centre was planned and built on the original site. The facility opened in 1978 as a mixed children's home. A secure assessment centre opened slightly later, c. 1980. The home closed on the 30th September 1993. The closure was intended to be temporary but after the second interim report of the select panel of residential child care it was decided that “Oxendon House should not re-open in its previous form and the committee at their November meeting should consider what alternative uses could be made of the building and site.”
