  • Scope and Content
Refers to agricultural unrest at Flitwick. He reports, “They sent me word that there was a Row and much mischief going on, and I was off there with some of our mounted men immediately. It was grossly exaggerated. There have been no disturbances, beyond a demand for increase of wages, and a fellow or two who had compelled others to strike work were taken into custody.” He mentions the arrival of 400 special constables. He continues, “A few jokes, some reasoning, much good temper, with a thundering threat that if I was obliged to strike it should be done in earnest, sent all away, apparently quiet and good humoured.” Mentions a letter sent to Mr Edwards from the Reverend John Lafont, (see L30/18/27), congratulating him on his regiment’s actions, [which stopped a riot at Stotfold on the previous Saturday]. He reports a full attendance of military men across Bedfordshire, and commends their dedication and good organisation.
