Aunt Stainforth reports that Tom Constable has presented himself to the Archbisop of York with, Grantham thinks, a view to the prebend of Stillington. Their Aunt knows the Archbishop's promise of a scarf and stall [to Waddilove]and if it be Stillington wants him to decline it, in favour of Tom Constable. Grantham disapproves, wants to repay Waddilove's friendship etc... will try to explain this to their Aunt. Tom Constable suffering by his "being bound in 800 for their poor uncle". Fritz's new man promising; active & orderly, suiting his master "a precise, dainty little fellow". Hope the Escurial passes quickly as the Queen of Portugal's arrival will make some novelty.
