  • Scope and Content
Disappointed with place at first sight. Narrow streets, dirt and stink of people. Reference to 'Princess Emily'[Pelham?]. Has now seen better parts of town and people. Dined with Lord Harcourt and Lord & Lady Albermarle, all live in same house. Attended Comedie Italienne. Meeting with Tailor. Fritz's cloth almost a white watered tabby with green, purple, pink flowers lined with apple green. Dined at Lord Harcourt`s, visited some of Corps Diplomatique, went on to Ambassador of Malta's; thence to Madame de Fuentes, saw Madame de Lavagne. Supping tonight at the Chatelet, thence to a Bal Masque [Masked Ball] at the Sardinian Embassador’s in honour of a marriage [not named]. “ The sacrifice of almost every necessary I mean among the lower sort of people to mere externals is truly ridiculous, I believe they had rather have a silk coat to their back than a good dinner elsewhere” . Louse, bug and flea, former only excluded by powder & pomatum. Staying at Hotel de Modene. Note from Grantham at end; reserving an account of the foolish, ugly & shabby Ball until next letter.
