  • Scope and Content
By Waddilove's letter realises Fritz has less control over the Election Day than first thought etc... Pitt's friends now sanguine about his success at Cambridge; afraid of deterring people from coming by saying so. Thinks Mr. Laurence very queer, assumes this is the opinion at Ripon. Reference to their Sheriff’s unqualified assent to a Paper handed to him about the Meeting etc.. He was at Court today, well supported and well received. Letter and visit from Mrs. Weddell, thinks he has given her entire satisfaction. Mrs. Allanson has given her assurance of support. Suspects she was behind her husband's Nomination, she shows only surprise and anxiety. Bluitt's have been fair enough, York Tavern less so, in not accepting the Proposal, Fritz a better judge of this. Hopes it may be a compromise, if not, that Weddell and Duncombe will be chosen. Made his Yorkshire conspired[?] for, to Pitt himself, "who fairly entered into my Reasons and had indeed, as he said presupposed them". New Peers to kiss hands very soon, some County Arrangement to take place first. Grantham reminded him and Lord Sydney to give them proper notice, added what was proper about Mr. Parker. Devonshire Address up today. Mr. Parker well received. Jack [Parker] to Town, quite ignorant, acquiesced with former's declining the County, if on health grounds. Much pleased by real reason, must become attentive to his Conduct in future. Miss [Parker] also much pleased. Dining with Parker and Lord Walsingham on Monday. Lord Pelham hurst at ill success of Seaford, lost both. J. Robinson undermined the Borough and brought in the eldest Neville and Sir Peter Parker. Watson and Sir T. Miller lost it by one vote which was Mr. Huris, called away by death of Dr. Hurdis at Chichester. Several improper candidated at Lewes, no appearance of Opposition in the County yet Lord Pelham uneasy etc... Thinks Tom should have been earlier at Seaford and Harry neglects Lewis. Baker thrown out at Hertford, it's thought the Minister will be stronger than expected etc.... Pepper and Kenyon kissed hands today. Declined French Embassador's invitation to meet the Duke of Chartes having a good chance of a Boz at the Gamester, and Dance. Also declined offer today to meet Sir Joshua and Sir Joseph Banks, wouldn't leave Lady Grantham at so short a warning. Excellent Tench from Wrest. Going to Mrs. Montagu's and Mrs. Child's. Boys behaved well for Lady Pelham this morning. Thank Waddilove for his letter. Lady G, Tom, Fed [Fred] and Fee send Love. Very cold, violent hail storm today.
