  • Scope and Content
Intense cold, hopes it will not inconvenience him on the road. Visited their Aunt's, Sackville Street, St. James' Square, Lord Clarendon's, Stratton Street and the French Embassador's. Aunt better. Mr. Parker's promotion, told Lord Hardwicke. Good Company at Lord Clarendon's; Lady Bell, Lady Grantham, Lady Harriet Pitt, Lord Chatham (Pitt couldn't come) and Pepper Arcen. Latter's high spirits, effects of them on Company. Lord Hyde sat in a cold place at dinner and fainted. Recovered and went to French Embassadors. The Ladies were gone, agreed not to tell them. Pepper taking large house in Lincoln's Inn fields, didn't deny prospect of his marriage. It was agreed Fritz had no right to be affronted at his falling asleep in a Tete a tete with Duchess of Rutland. Grantham took him aside and talked fully to him on the Subject it had been Fritz's intention for some time to mention to him. Promised to take a proper opportunity etc.... ["Subject" not specified]. Sunday Circle at Stratton Street, Miss Pelhams, Miss Robinson, Lady Miller and George. All seems quiet in Lewes, Sussex, even Seaford. Problematic whether bringing in the two members will be carried at the altar. Sir Thomas more popular than Watson. Duc de Chartres at the French Embassador's, just arrived. Mr. Denby came to Town with the Address of the Progress of the Westminster Election. Fox ill received and grossly insulted in Clove Market. Prince of Wales has turned off several of his Tradesmen and dependants for refusing to vote Lady Salisbury's all voted as she wished. Octavo of Don Quixote just sent from Mr. Payne, will have it bound with cypher E.C. for Mr. Carter. Four o'clock. Hail, rain and snow. Obeyed Lady Robinson's summons, she has put her Interest into his hands, agreement that they cannot be against Mr. Weddell. Of the two opposing Candidates, Mr. Duncombe has fairest claim on them. Indifferent about Town of York. Lady Robinson has leaning to the Cavendishes from Derbyshire. Expecting to hear from Ellis as to the County, hopes it may be compromised as Wilberforce and Foljambe disinclined to go to great expense. Lord Euston requesting their attendance at the Levée. Hopes to be there on Mr. Parker's account. Pepper's appointment; in Gazette tonight, kisses hands tomorrow. Supposes MacDonald will succeed him. Jack anxious to accompany his father to the Election. Wedgewood's and Clay's this morning, also Sackville Street. Nanny had visited their Aunt, glad of her news etc.. Seven o'clock. Letters from Ellis, Weddell, Lord Galway and also Mr. Beckwith for Fritz. Replying to Weddell he will be for him [gives reasons] as a personal favour, expect no more. Solicited Grantham for Lord John and Sir William Milner, any countenance given to former will be due his having done so before under similar circumstances. Will see Mrs. Weddell and tell her he does all he can. Weddell mentioned meetings and proposals about which Grantham hadn't heard. Large meeting of property appointed him to join Mr. Foljambe, all that out of the question. Beckwith writes Laurence will not be down, may give Fritz more control of his time, doesn't want him to travel more than necessary. Lady Grantham well, send love. Tom, Fed [Fred} and Fee all send "Tatas". Love to Waddiloves.
