  • Scope and Content
Their Aunt and Mrs. Eliza have both had the complaint [not specified] currently going around. Dr. Warren said it was not fatal or serious and was on the incline. Draper not well. Definitive Treaty less perfect than the Preliminaries. Draper supposes Ministers will blame the authors of the latter, and that they continue to be much [?] against Lord Shelburne. Honduras Article thought to be less favourable than in Preliminaries, Spanish having more than at first. Treaty to be signed this Wednesday, or was sighed last Wednesday. Maddison dangerously ill. His brother and Lord Maitland leaving today for Paris[?]. Taken ill after supper at Duke of Manchester's on Saturday, thought to be caused by poison in the copper or elsewhere. Heard news from Troth in Sneyd's Room. Falkner confirmed the account from C. Fox. Sir Joseph who was there this morning knew nothing of it, he will be deeply afflicted. Sir John Russell's Case, their Aunt said, was mismanaged. The Princess has been very good to Mrs. Russell. Lady Pelham approves of Tom's going but is upset by it. Lord Pelham satisfied with the ship and is persuaded the Task is not too arduous. Letter from T. Pelham enclosed [not present]. Lord Middleton advised the acceptable but is unhappy at Tom's absences. [Middleton] at ease at Peper harow and as "fancifull about the Dear Child as possible". Their Aunt says Lucy is better but not well and very pale. Unless to give a verbal account to Ministers, Tom Pelham unlikely to be in England for Christmas. Lord Pelham attribute his going entirely to the handsome behaviour of Duke of Portland. Taking Skibbeare for his private secretary. They know nothing of him, Draper abuses him and Duke of Newcastle "from ye Grave, would go made to think of it". The Fauconby's have lost a favourite youngest child. Lady Melburne has been in great danger of a morbid fever. Lord Hardwick to Town tomorrow to see his Grandchildren, is in good spirits as Sir Joseph, tho' Baldwin thinks him very ill. He has weekly concerts and Miss Absey[?] to sing at them. Sir Joseph called. Grantham called on his Aunt, gave a good account of her nephews [Worsleys]. Knows nothing of his Salary or Law Suit as Sneyd not in. Met Falkener, talked little as Grantham "full" of poor Maddison. Called at Ford's doors then returned home. Concerned about his sons being cooped up in garden without a lawn. Delapierre going to see the houses at Pitt's buildings. Dr. Ford says there is a good garden there, locked up but open to them. Tom has made acquaintance with Duchess of Leicester, Lady La. Conolly and Lady Sarah. The boys bore journey well.... "meeting with them quite overpowered me". Grantham affirms his satisfaction at conferring with Fritz etc... Dr. Ford found Lady Grantham well [pregnant?]. Best love to the Boys [nephews] ask them to thank their mother for letting them see so much of them. P.S. Third volume of Carter's Travels in Spain and the Bishop's Sermons for Mr. Ramshaw.
