Received his letter and sentiments upon the Vacancy [for Cofferer]. Awaiting an appointment with Lord N.[North], having requested it. The Place is well worth asking for, good opportunity also for placing Fritz. Possibility of "C__e's" wishing it for himself and "S__r". [Carlisle and Storer]. "G. S__n's [George Selwyn's?] letter implies no more than a wish. Grantham would rather have the cofferer's place with Fritz as Deputy than the Justice in Eyre and Fritz at Board of Trade or Green Cloth. Would dislike succeeding C__e in his present employment. Ld. T__t [Talbot/Stormont] talked to Ld. P. [Pelham?] about the latter having the Cofferer's and himself the "W___e". Gave up the idea having heard Grantham's aspiration to the former. "M. S___l " thinks it not designed for Grantham etc... mention of use of the word "kept". Fraper eager about Grantham's application. Approves getting the money from Ireland and agrees with discharging the Object they think burdensome. Draper to give Grantham 200 and Fritz to be given 25. Forgotten bill of 30 Louis from Bordeaux just arrived. Marble Tables arrived from Ostend. Hoping for Chocolate to arrive also. Prince of Wales and his brother very polite to Grantham yesterday, also the two eldest Princesses. Royal Family a fine sight. Dinner at Northumberland House. Sat next to Lord Mansfield. Spectator at Ball. St. John very attentive, thinks "they are more advanced that she allows". All anxious for Grantham's opinion of him [?Mansfield] "she" learnt of it via Lady P. [Pelham?], very pleased. Dining with Lord Hardwicke on Friday, much satisfied about their Civilities to Mr. Yorke. Munro at Court with Katencamp and Gregory, former a sad looking youth. Munro at Bath next week. Attended Levée and visited their Aunt today. Mrs. N.'s [North?] ill behaviour. Disagreed with Mrs. "Mac__y". "If being kept means that, they are mistaken". Writing to Lord Chatham for directions about the money [he owed G.]. Crawford satisfied about Grantham's share if debt. Coutt's soliciting to be Grantham's Banker, he was Stanley's. Grantham favours Boldero's, Waddilove wants Martin. Mytton has appointed Grantham the Guardian to his son, who is new at Westminster. Duchess of Devonshire with child. Sadly affected by Stanley's misfortune. Sloane will ultimately greatly benefit. Whoever comes in will name his own Deputy which is how Stanley came in. There are three Clerks and a Venison Clerk besides. Do not tell "S_____r" more than necessary about the Vacancy.
